Be Grateful

Scripture to Memorize
(Recite at each lesson and during the month.)

"In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

Lesson 1

  • Read President Hinckley's comments on "Be Grateful" from his talk "A Prophets Counsel and Prayer for Youth" (New Era - Jan. 2001, pg. 4) or "The Prophet's Counsel: The Six Bs" (Friend - Feb. 2001, pg. 25)
  • Read Thankfulness by Janet McDonnell from the "Values to Live By" series.
  • Read the poem "Forgive Me When I Whine" on pg. 38 of the Grade 6 Step by Step Pathway Reader.
  • Sing: "I am Glad For Many Things" Children's Songbook pg. 151.
  • Encourage family members to keep a gratitude journal for the month.  List 3 things you are thankful for each day.

Lesson 2

  • Read about "Bee Grateful" in A Hive of Busy Bees by Effie M. Williams.
  • Choose and read some stories/poems on gratitude from The Bookshelf for Boys & Girls.
  • Teach the first part of the lesson on Gratitude in Introducing Christian Virtues Using Aesop's Fables by Maggie Rayner.
  • Sing: "Can a Little Child Like Me?" Children's Songbook pg. 9 or "Children All Over the World" Children's Songbook pg. 16.

Lesson 3

  • Teach the second part of the lesson on Gratitude in Introducing Christian Virtues Using Aesop's Fables by Maggie Rayner.
  • Teach selections from the lesson on "Thanksgiving" Chapter 22 in Christ's Ideals for Living.
  • Choose another story from The Bookshelf for Boys & Girls.
  • Sing: "Thanks to Our Father" Children's Songbook pg. 20.

Lesson 4

  • Use - Sharing Time: I Thank Thee, Dear Father (Friend - May 1994, pg. 44)
  • Read excerpts from Chapter 8: Gratitude in President Hinckley's book Standing for Something.
  • Make a gratitude poster - include about 10 things you are thankful for.
  • Sing Hymn # 241 Count Your Many Blessings.
