Truelight Academy Home Education Guide
"Our balanced approach to life and learning for a Latter-day Saint Home Education."

The Truelight Academy Home Education Guide is currently under revision.  It will take some time to update and add to.  I thank you for your continued patience.  The majority of this guide will be lists of the best resources we have found for different subject areas and age groups, the classics in each field.

This guide is based on the variety of methods and principles we use in our homeschool: Charlotte Mason Education, Classical Education, Leadership Education, and our own balanced educational approach.

Our balanced approach includes learning from The Arts of a Balanced Home Education that I have developed and outlined below.

You can use the church magazines to follow the Arts of a Balanced Home Education as you homeschool your children.  See Using Church Magazines.

The methods, plans, curriculum choices, resources etc., that you will find in this guide have been chosen based on what we feel is best for our children.  If you feel they will work with your children, you are welcome to use our ideas in your home.  I am sure we will be adapting these plans for each of our individual children often, as there is no perfect method for every child.  Homeschool choices are best decided upon through constant prayer.

Levels of Learning

Joyful Learning Stage Overview
(ages 0 - 5)

When planning a program of education for this youngest age group, I try to keep everything we do joyful for my children.  I want them to enjoy learning right from birth and have the joyful attitude of learning carry with them through life.  I have chosen what I feel are essential areas of learning for this stage as well as other enriching experiences that my children can do as they so desire.

Essentials for this age group are:

  • Eternal Edification -- studies of the gospel.
  • Enduring Character -- learning family values and good character traits.
  • Emotions & Empathy -- forging relationships among family members.
  • Expectations -- work, life skills, healthy living.
  • Encore (things to do over and over again) -- music, reading, beginning number skills, beginning memorization, & introduction to a foreign language.

Enriching Experiences for this age group are:

  • Enjoyable Activities -- such as arts and crafts, field trips, toys, free play, learning games, handwriting and many other learning activities as long as the child enjoys it.  Never force a child to do an activity, keep it enjoyable and stop before he/she wants to.
  • Explanations -- answer all the why's, what's this, and so on, that young children ask.

Exploring Learning Stage Overview
(ages 6 - 11)

When planning a program of education for this age group, I include my children in the process, so they can have an influence on the subjects they wish to explore.  I have chosen what I feel are essential areas of learning for this stage as well as other enriching experiences that my children can do as they so desire.  This is a time to develop educational skills that will allow for more advanced study in the next learning stage.

Essentials for this age group are:

  • Eternal Edification -- studies of the gospel.
  • Enduring Character -- learning family values and good character traits.
  • Emotions & Empathy -- forging relationships among family members.
  • Expectations -- work, life skills, & healthy living.
  • Endearing Service -- service projects on their own and with family.
  • Encore (things to do over and over again) -- music, reading, writing, arithmetic, memorization, & foreign language study.
  • Enlightenment -- studying alone and/or with family great classics in the following areas: history, poetry, literature, music, art, science and math.

Enriching Experiences for this age group are:

  • Explorations -- nature, geography, additional foreign languages, astronomy, weather, sports... you name it...  & anything the child wishes to explore and learn about.
  • Expressions -- creative arts, handicrafts, drama, sign language, and more.

Apprentice Learning Stage Overview
(ages 12 - 17)

When planning a program of education for this age group, it is important to guide our children towards a possible mission in life.  Our children many not be completely sure what career path they want to take yet, but a general idea can be decided upon.  If a child would like a career in maths and sciences, then an educational plan should include a lot of math and science.  It can be helpful to find good mentors for our children and possible opportunities for apprenticeship.

Essentials for this age group are:

  • Eternal Edification -- studies of the gospel.
  • Enduring Character -- learning family values and good character traits.
  • Emotions & Empathy -- forging relationships among friends & family members.
  • Expectations -- work, life skills, & healthy living.
  • Endearing Service -- service projects on their own and with family.
  • Encore (things to do over and over again) -- music, reading, writing, logic, rhetoric, math, memorization, & foreign language study.
  • Extensive Study -- once a certain career path or mission in life is determined, the youth will begin a very in-depth study to prepare for this.  Study will include reading of classics in the chosen area, experimentation and finding of mentors to emulate.

Enriching Experiences (as time allows) for this age group are:

  • Explorations -- science, history & geography, and any personal interests.
  • Expressions -- creativity of youth's choice such as music, drama, handicrafts, art and so forth.

The Arts of a Balanced Home Education
by Katrina Lybbert

I feel that a balanced home education should include a well rounded study of many subjects.  I have chosen 10 areas of learning or "Arts" that I have categorized all the subjects we may possibly wish to learn into.  Spiritual learning should be a key component and to equally balance the scales must take high priority.  Not all subjects will receive the same amount of time devoted to them, depending on our children's interests.  Educational plans should be individualized for each child.  If we can inspire our children to study many subjects from these Arts, our children will be very well prepared, mentally, physically, and spiritually, to encounter life's challenges.  I want to help my children achieve their potential here on earth so they can return to their Heavenly Home having accomplished all that they should.
